Science Support

UIC is experienced at working in remote Arctic conditions and is sensitive to the unique design and logistical challenges it presents. UIC and its family of companies are uniquely qualified to provide development in the Arctic, whether it be in oil, gas, or other natural resource exploration, land development, construction, professional design, engineering services, remote logistics, or local personnel and operations. UIC delivers a single-source portfolio of services to support our clients in all phases of their project life cycle.

Our home of Barrow is the northernmost community in America and the largest village on the North Slope of Alaska. Barrow is conveniently situated at the junction of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas and serves as a modern hub for the industry.

The Iñupiat of the North Slope has a long history of providing support and knowledge to the scientific community. In 1992, UIC founded the 7,466-acre Charles Etok Edwardsen Barrow Environmental Observatory to conserve areas that have a scientific value.

UIC Science, a member of the UIC family of companies, handles all permitting for scientific use. While assisting visiting scientists conducting research in the Arctic with their projects’ logistical needs, UIC Science hires local Iñupiat staff members that are extremely knowledgeable about the Arctic environment.  From Arctic orientation and facilities planning to vehicle maintenance and bear hazing, UIC Science works to ensure researchers’ needs are addressed.
