On Friday, November 30, 2018 a magnitude 7.0 quake hit Anchorage and surrounding areas resulting in structural damage at UIC’s Anchorage main office building on Arctic Spur Road. Fortunately there were no injuries other than some rattled nerves. Upon inspection it was determined that multiple footings in the west end of the building received damage due to the quake. A third party structural engineer reviewed the damage and posted a yellow notice on the front door calling for restricted use in this area of the building. The employees workspaces in this area were moved to the center and east sections of the building and to additional temporary office spaces at the Calais building. A repair for this section is being designed and work will be starting soon with the intent of reoccupying this space mid to late spring 2019.
